In the 17th century Nicholas Boson wrote  a story in the Cornish language. He wanted to preserve the language for the future. And we are happy to read the story nowadays. We can read the words - but we can read between the lines as well. In the story John said, "I will go to look for work to do, and you can earn your living here." He wasn't a miner or a fisherman. He went east and found work on a farm. But Boson didn't write anything of work for John's wife. What work could she get? Maid in a big house, perhaps, cleaning the wooden floors? Could she spin wool or sew clothes? But perhaps there wasn't any wool to spin. No skill was needed to be a washerwoman.
