Salt was important in Cornwall when we had a pilchard fishery. Salt was used to preserve the fish in barrels, “head to tail”. The fish was sold in the Catholic countries of Europe (fish every Friday). Some salt was made in Cornwall, but salt from Brittany was considered to be better. Sometimes the fishermen waited for salt from France before landing their catch. There is a rhyme written by John Boson (in about 1700) about pilchards and salt. “Pilchards! Pilchards! I am not a fine poetess and my verses are not refined poetry. I would prefer to write songs, but I don't know how to compose the music. I am not a composer. It's hard to get rhymes for some words. Can I remember rhymes? I can't remember exactly. But "amusing" is a rhyme for "exactly" (more or less). "Moth" is another rhyme, but how can I use it? The picture is a peppered moth. Ma'n  cân an bobel ow cana a gerenja. There is a timeless folksong, "The Cuckoo". The cuckoo is a pretty bird, she singeth as she flies. She should come in April, but I have heard no song this year.
