Pandr’ew hebma? Kevys veu va hedhyw et aga lowarth gen ow gour. Preiweyth ewa – gwres a brei rüdh. Nag ew ev medhel pecar’a dhor. Pur galish ew ha poos rag y vrâster – pebys ew. Pe oos ew ev? Eus pòrpos dhodho? Piw veu an gwrear – veu va flogh? Garow ew ev – nag ew fin. Da ew genam preiweyth da – ma cùntellyans bian dhebm, oll gwres en Kernow. Ev a dheuth dhort Truru, Porth Ia hag Eglosmelan. Radn an henwyn ew aswonys dres oll an ves (bes nag ens gwres na fella) – Troika, Bernard Leach, Lake, rag sampel. Ke dhe ves a gath – me venja kemeres foto a’m preiweyth!


What is this? It was found today in our garden by my husband. It is pottery – made of red clay. It is not soft like earth. It is very hard and heavy for its size – it has been baked. How old is it? Does it have a purpose? Who was the maker – was it a child? It is crude – it’s not refined. I like good pottery – I have a small collection, all made in Cornwall. It came from Truro, St Ives and Mullion. Some of the names are world-famous (but they are no longer made) – Troika, Bernard Leach, Lake’s, for example. Go away cat – I would like to take a photo of my pottery!

Den po maw gwiskys en lavrek o moy saw avel benyn pow mos gwiskys en pilen. Today I watched Lynn Mayers talking about bal-maidens. It was a very interesting lecture, from Kresen Kernow (Cornwall Centre). There were many bal-maidens in my parish (in a red area of the map). There is still the remains of a mine nearby. The work could be dangerous. Sometimes a girl's clothes were caught in machinery. Long skirts were not safe. A man or boy dressed in a pair of trousers was safer than a woman or girl dressed in a skirt.
