What sort of handiwork are these? They are a type of needlework. They are not embroidery exactly, but there is some embroidery in them.
They are patchwork, patched with various bits of cloth. There are several words stitched on the patches: metal and names connected with mining. Some of the patches look old; they are stained (with tea or rust?). There are images of engineering: beam-engines, engine houses, a man-engine with miners, and a balmaiden.
