Today, I am looking at the compass. There are four points of the compass (four quarters). How do we know which direction is East? Look at any church. The altar is always in the east end. And often there is a tower (the belltower) in the west end for the bells. Each church is dedicated to its own saint. This is the church of St Nyulina. The name of the village in 1415 was "Eglosnyulyn". Now it is called "Newlyn East" - but why "East". There is another "Newlyn" by the sea, further westward. It is older than St Newlyn East. It was the first "Newlyn" in 1290. There was anchorage for many ships, a pool for the fleet, so "Lûlyn". That is not the name of some saint. There is a bus-stop, but Newlyn East is not by the sea and there is no anchorage for ships.

Den po maw gwiskys en lavrek o moy saw avel benyn pow mos gwiskys en pilen. Today I watched Lynn Mayers talking about bal-maidens. It was a very interesting lecture, from Kresen Kernow (Cornwall Centre). There were many bal-maidens in my parish (in a red area of the map). There is still the remains of a mine nearby. The work could be dangerous. Sometimes a girl's clothes were caught in machinery. Long skirts were not safe. A man or boy dressed in a pair of trousers was safer than a woman or girl dressed in a skirt.
